Reading Questions
Who is Kelly?
- Kelly is the leader of a small redshirts crew that was traveling in the cart on the California Trail. On page 59 they describe Kelly as " a sour-looking feller with a face like molded bread, pock-faced." As the text continues you can decipher that Kelly is for pro-slavery when he said " Let's vote on it. All in favor of hanging Pardee for being a nigger-loving Free State Yankee and an agent of the New England Emigrant Yellow Belly Society, raise your hand."
Who are the Red Shirts?
- The red shirts were described on page 58 as " a posse of sixteen redshirts on horses in columns of twos appeared. They was Missourians, and traveling like an army." Throughout the scene, the men were mainly passing drinks back and forth and becoming frustrated at Pardee for not being abe to read.
Who is Nigger Bob?
- Nigger Bob on page 62 was described as " a hardy, tall, fit Negro, not more than twenty-five, setting atop the driver's bench on the wagon." Also, as Nigger Bob was talking with Onion on page 62 he also mentions that he was a married man.
I really liked what you wrote. I especially like how you used modern day words such as posse to describe the group of red shirts. Overall I believe you did a great job with the references you made to the book to fit the descriptions of the three questions being asked.
